How to Effectively Organize a Closet

Does your closet look like an experiment gone wrong while learning how to become a pastry chef? Do you have trouble finding the simplest piece from your wardrobe because it’s piled under clothes from last summer? If so, you may be in need of some closet organization tips. I have been watching Clean House since the show came out, and I have learned a lot about closet organization along the way. I figured I would relay some of my tips and tricks to all of you so that you can have a closet to be proud of in the future. Here are a few ways you can declutter your closet so that you can actually navigate through it when you go in.

Think about What You Need

One of the first steps you need to take in your closet organization is setting aside the items that you need on a regular basis. These need to be easy to access in the closet at all times. For instance, my father in law wears his robe a lot in the day because he stays at home. Thus he has the robe right at the front of the closet so he can quickly grab it when he wakes up. You need to think about what you need on a daily or semi-daily basis so you can make that a priority in the space.

Separate by Seasons

If you have a limited amount of space in your closet, you may want to separate your clothes based on the seasons so you can just have one set out at all times. Put your winter clothing in a tub until September hits, and then you can replace your summer clothes with all of those. Put the summer clothes in the same tub and store it in the corner of the closet. Doing this will save you space, and it will give you a chance to see how much clothing you actually have for a certain season. That’s a win-win situation.

Fold and Use Hangers

You don’t have to put every article of clothing on a hanger. Some pieces will work just find folded in a drawer. My father has a whole room in his house that is the overflow of his closet, just because he refuses to put his shirts in a drawer. Why? I have no idea. You don’t want to end up like my dad, do you? Try to fold what you can and hang what needs to be wrinkle-free and easy to access. This will create a lot more space to work in over time.

Get a Shoe Rack

If you have more than two or three pairs of shoes, you need to get some type of shelving system to hold everything in one place. My father in law has 20 to 30 pairs of shoes in his closet, and at one point in time, they were all under a rocking chair in his bedroom. I swear that’s the truth. I put some shoe racks in the closet, and he could finally see all of the shoes he had to choose from. You can get one that goes on the floor, under the bed, on the door, or wherever else you want it. Just put it up so you have some place to put your shoes.

If you think about the overall function of your closet, you should be able to position everything so that it is easy to get to and still tucked away nice and neat. Then all you have to do is make an effort to maintain the organization in the future. I have faith that you can do this. No worries. You just have to develop the right habits and stick with them.

Learning to Part with Old Clothes

Clothing can be a big source of clutter, and it seems to be one of the hardest items for people to get rid of. My husband and I helped his father sort through a closet yesterday, and we were actually surprised to see how willing he was to part with some of his clothes. He had had some of them for 30+ years, so it was amazing to watch him finally let them go. If you want to feel that same sort of liberation, you need to learn how to part with your old clothing. This is the only way you can keep your closets clean and your world clutter free. Here are some tips to help you figure out what you do and don’t want to toss.

Flip Your Hangers

One of the best methods I have discovered for getting rid of clothes is the hanger flip method. Start by putting all of your clothes on hangers, where all of the hangers face the same direction. That means if you are looking at your clothing from the front, the hook is facing the same way on every piece. Whenever you wear an article of clothing and wash it, put it back on a hanger in the opposite direction. Then in a few months, you can see which clothes you have and have not worn. If there are still some hooks facing the original direction, you can contemplate letting those clothes go.

Ignore the Tags

I cannot tell you how many times I have heard someone describe a piece of clothing as “brand new – never been worn” just because it had a tag on it. There is a big difference between a brand new article of clothing and something that has never been worn. Your parachute pants and acid wash jeans may still have the tag on them, but that does not mean they are new in the slightest. You have to make decisions about your wardrobe based on the trends of the modern world, unless you like looking like a blast from the past. Think about whether or not you would wear a piece of clothing, not whether or not you have worn it in the past. Chances are it has been sitting in your closet for a reason.

Get a Second Opinion

When my husband and I were helping his father yesterday, dad kept asking for my opinion on certain shirts. Some of them looked alright, and others were on the verge of scary. With my help, he was able to get rid of the scary looking ones and just keep the ones that would look good on him. Sometimes all you need is a second opinion to help you get rid of clothing you just shouldn’t be wearing.

Think of Other People

When you get rid of your clothing, you give someone else a chance to enjoy the clothes like you did. Give them away to Goodwill so that other people can get good use out of them. You never know who you may help out as a result. You could help a former police officer clothe his family after a big layoff at work, or you could help an unemployed woman get a suit for a job interview. A little donation goes a long way.
